Courthouse Alert Kickoff Event -- Second Department, Appellate Division This year’s kick-off for JALBCA’s Annual Courthouse Alert will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Appellate Division, Second Department Courthouse, 45 Monroe Place, Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Hermanson Memorial Symposium -- JALBCA Annual Symposium This year’s annual symposium will take place on October 11, 2005 at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Once again, JALBCA will seek to arrange for two free CLE credits for attendees. Fighting Chance -- November 12, 2005, Program at Southhampton Hospital On November 12, Fighting Chance will present a day-long program entitled “Coping With Cancer on the East End: A Day of Education Advocacy & Hope” at the Bay Street Theatre, Sag Harbor, NY. The keynote speaker will be Larry Norton MD, Deputy Physician-in-Chief Breast Cancer Programs and also the Chief of Solid Tumor Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). The program will be co-partnered with Ellen’s Run, The American Cancer Society and SouthFork Breast Health Coalition. Fighting Chance is a Suffolk County non-profit established in 2001, founded by Duncan Darrow, Esq. (partner, Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP), comprised of cancer survivors and others who have been caregivers to loved ones with the disease. The group seeks to share their experience with cancer patients and other caregivers across the East End of Long Island. Working with Fighting Chance is Kerrie Zampini, founder and formerly Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program at MSKCC. Ms. Zampini retired from MSKCC in April 2004 and presently serves as Director of Clinical Services/ Programs for Fighting Chance, and as a consultant to Ellen’s Run. Solomon Internship JALBCA is pleased to announce that ToniAnn Gagliardi, a third year law student at Pace University School of Law, has been selected to be the first Susan B. Solomon intern. Ms. Gagliardi will conduct legal research and provide administrative and other assistance in connection with the upcoming Annual Symposium.Ms. Gagliardi resides in Hastingson Hudson, NY. She has received a University Merit Scholarship from Pace Law School and the Carl A. Vergari Scholarship from the Columbian Lawyers’ Association of Westchester County. As an undergraduate at Binghamton University, Ms. Gagliardi majored in Philosophy, Politics & Law with a minor Sociology. After having a grandmother survive breast cancer and a grandfather succumb to liver cancer, she volunteered with the local office of The American Cancer Society. The Susan B. Solomon Internship was created in honor of Susan Solomon, our colleague and friend. Susan Solomon was an active member of JALBCA. She served as JALBCA’s Secretary and was responsible for one of JALBCA’s major, yearly achievements, its October Courthouse Alert. Upcoming JALBCA Programs – Tentative Schedule September: Survivors’ Group – September 15 JALBCA’s Survivors’ group is meeting on September 15, 2005 in the chambers of Hon. Shirley W. October: Annual Symposium -- October 11 Topic: Controversy surrounding the early-approval of Herceptin and regulatory requirements in bringing a drug to market. November: Update on ASCO – November 9 Updates from the recent ASCO conference on breast cancer treatment advances. Speaker: Dr. Edward Ambinder (President, NYSSMOH) January: Legal Cases and Controversies in Cancer Care – January 17 Discussion of actual legal cases and controversies breast cancer patients face in New York City. Speaker: Randye Retkin, Esq. (Director, Legal Health, NYLAG) February: New Technologies in Breast Cancer Care -- tentative topic – date to be announced. Discussion of new technologies and treatment methods in breast cancer care. March: Managing Side Effects of Cancer Treatment -- tentative topic – date to be announced. Discussion will focus on the various side effects, such as lymphedema, discomfort and pain, faced by patients undergoing breast cancer treatment. April: The State of Cancer Care in New York City: Is New York Falling Behind, A Health Policy Discussion -- date to be announced. Discussion will focus on the quality and accessibility of cancer care in New York City; comparisons with cancer care in other large cities across the United States. MANAGING FATIGUE WITH INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE Wednesday, December 7: 1:00 – 2:30 PM 430 E. 67th St. - RRL 101 Panel discussion and Q&A with integrative medicine experts Wendy Minor, LMT, Donna Wilson, RN and Yi Lilly Zhang, PT, L.Ac., MS who will discuss various integrative medicine techniques (including massage, exercise and acupuncture) that can be useful in addressing fatigue. SEXUAL HEALTH Undergoing surgery, high dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy may bring about changes in sexual function or feelings. Discussion will focus on the latest information and address concerns of attendees in these sessions and possible changes in their attitudes and feelings about sexuality.
