JALBCA Programs 2003

Attendance at the JALBCA educational programs that follow the monthly Board meetings has increased significantly. Guest experts discuss scientific advancements, legal issues and lifestyle choices related to cancer diagnosis and treatment, and programs take place at the offices of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. Look for announcements on upcoming speakers, topics, and details about date and location, in direct mail flyers and in the JALBCA newsletter. All programs begin promptly at 6:30 pm, admission is free, and all are welcome.

On March 12, 2003, Lynn Ratner, MD, Medical Oncologist, Assistant Clinical Professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Attending Physician, Mount Sinai Medical Center, presented an overview entitled “What Oncologists Consider in Determining Treatment Protocols for Male and Female Breast Cancer Patients.”

Dr. Ratner took the audience through a step-by-step case analysis of a patient with a high-risk primary breast cancer using, as a template, a case from the Network for Oncology Communication and Research. Through the presentation the audience was brought into the decision-making process from the time of diagnosis up until the moment, in this particular case, of a recurrence of the disease. Dr. Ratner emphasized that treatment protocols are determined not only in terms of the control of disease but also by the patient’s desires with respect to quality of life and his/her other specific concerns. He described the criteria considered in determining a treatment plan, including those involved in metastatic disease. Additionally, Dr. Ratner discussed the use of adjuvant therapy, hormonal agents, and the role of Herceptin in HER-2 positive patients. He also spoke about new drugs that are now available for many forms of cancer.

JALBCA also co-sponsors programs with other organizations that take place separately from JALBCA Board meeting dates and locales. On March 26, 2003, JALBCA co-sponsored, with Saint Vincent’s Hospital, “When Smoke Ran Like Water.” Devra Lee Davis, Ph.D., MPH, Visiting Professor, London School of Hygiene and Topical Medicine, and renowned Epidemiologist, gave a compelling narrative revealing how environmental toxins affect a broad spectrum of human health issues. She offered suggestions to attendees for reducing lifetime exposure to hormones, engaging in regular exercise, limiting the consumption of alcohol, and following a sensible diet that includes cruciferous vegetables. Dr. Davis shared findings from her research that include those concerning breast cancer and reproductive health issues.

Following JALBCA’s next Board meeting on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, Deborah Axelrod, MD, FACS, Chief, Breast Center, Saint Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, will discuss “Pathology, Its Role in Determining The Best Treatment for Cancer.” All are welcome for what is sure to be a captivating presentation.
