A Night to Remember:  JALBCA Tenth Annual Installation Dinner and Awards Presentation Honoring 10 Years

by Sandra C. Katz, Esq.

JALBCA celebrated its 10th year with a dinner at Water's Edge in Long Island City on the evening of May 13, 2002. Despite severe rainstorms, attendees turned out in full force, arriving by boat, subway and car. The fact that so many braved the storm was a tribute to the JALBCA organization, its accomplishments, its officers and the honorees. The indoor cocktail party was as lively as ever.

After brief opening remarks by Sandra C. Katz, Esq., Hon. William C. Thompson, recently retired from the Appellate Division, was introduced as master of ceremonies. Ms. Katz is a former JALBCA co-president and a partner in the firm of Tunick, Kupferman & Creadore, P.C., where she specializes in matrimonial law. Judge Thompson has been the treasurer since the organization's inception, and has launched the annual dinners.

Judge Thompson introduced Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye (JALBCA's Honorary President for the past 10 years), who installed the incoming officers, directors and co-presidents, Judge Helen Freedman and Roy L. Reardon, Esq. Judge Freedman summarized the accomplishments of JALBCA in the last decade, including the October Courthouse Alert and breast cancer screening project. She reported on this year's informational programs.

Judge Thompson introduced the outgoing president Barbara A. Ryan, Esq., who has just finished serving two enormously successful years as a beloved co-president of JALBCA. Ms. Ryan, a partner in Aaronson, Rappaport, Feinstein & Deutsch, LLP, brought expertise to the position, as both a healthcare lawyer and former nurse. Judge Thompson then made the awards presentation to all past presidents: Sheila L. Birnbaum, Esq., Myrna Felder, Esq., Martha (Mikki) L. Golar, Esq., Sandra C. Katz, Esq., Hon. Sondra Miller, Hon. E. Leo Milonas, Hon. Karla Moskowitz, Hon. Jacqueline W. Silbermann, and Ms. Ryan.

Sheila L. Birnbaum, Esq. is a former Associate Dean of New York University School of Law. She was JALBCA's first lawyer to become co-president, and continues to generously arrange for her law firm, Skadden Arps Slate Meager & Flom LLP, to provide for various needs of the organization, including monthly meetings.

Myrna Felder, Esq. is one of the country's leading matrimonial attorneys and past president and founder of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York. She was co-president during JALBCA's very early years, and used both her resources and her formidable talents to expand the organization, including the addition of the October Alert.

Martha L. Golar, Esq. (Mikki) has each year, with Ms. Ryan, planned and scripted each of the JALBCA symposia. These symposia are the organization's major annual educational events, and are scheduled in conjunction with various New York hospitals. Mikki, a corporate and real estate attorney, served three consecutive terms as a co-president of JALBCA.

Hon. Sondra Miller has been an Appellate Division judge of the Supreme Court since 1990. As co-president she was generous both with respect to her time, and in opening her home in order to host numerous meetings. In addition to breast cancer issues, she is a major supporter of children's rights.

Hon. E. Leo Milonas, a former JALBCA co-president, is a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop LLP., where his primary practice involves litigation, complex commercial matters, appeals, and alternative dispute resolution. Immediately prior to joining Pillsbury Winthrop, Judge Milonas served as Associate Justice, Appellate Division, Supreme Court. He was installed as president of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in May 2002.

Hon. Karla Moskowitz is a founder of JALBCA and its first secretary. She served as co-president of JALBCA for three consecutive terms, from 1994 to 1997. In 1991 she was elected to the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, and now sits in the Commercial Division of the Supreme Court, Civil Branch, New York City.

Hon. Jacqueline W. Silbermann served as JALBCA's co-president for two consecutive terms. She is currently Administrative Judge for the Supreme Court, New York County and Statewide Administrative Judge for Matrimonial Affairs. She was previously Administrative Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York.

The evening was both a tribute to some of the extraordinary people who have been instrumental in the success of the organization, and a celebration of JALBCA's bright future.

New Initiatives for October Alert

Downstate Coordinator Damaris Torrent and Upstate Coordinator Joyce Funda, in conjunction with JALBCA Co-Presidents Roy Reardon, Esq. and Hon. Helen Freedman, have designated additional new sites for the October Courthouse Alert. At a meeting at Mr. Reardon's offices at Simpson Thacher and Bartlett on July 2, 2002, plans were made for increasing the number of mammography screening sites to areas not previously served. We are pleased to include Harlem, Buffalo, Staten Island, and Red Hook, and are grateful to new volunteers at these sites. We will, of course, continue to facilitate mammography screening at all the locations serviced in the past including; Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
