The hotline was created by Judges and Lawyers who are breast cancer survivors and have gone through the rigors of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. They believe that the insight gained through their experiences can benefit those members of the profession, or potential members in the case of law students, who are now beginning treatment or who have finished treatment and need an empathetic, knowledgeable ear.

The hotline is designed to provide emotional support to share information with those who may have special needs as a consequence of their profession.

As explained by Justice Karla Moskowitz, Co-Chair of JALBCA's Peer Support Committee and a breast cancer survivor, "The phone line will not provide medical advice, legal advice or make decisions for people. However, our volunteers will help callers cope with the emotional drain, lack of sufficient knowledge and inadequate peer support that are common occurrences for those newly diagnosed."

Peer support hotline members have been trained by SHARE, SelfHelp for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancer. The training includes instruction on available resources and ways of counseling the newly diagnosed. SHARE has been offering "HOT LINE" support and assistance for breast and ovarian cancer survivors and their families since 1976.

Those seeking assistance may call JALBCA at (212) 683-6630. Volunteer judges and lawyers will return each call within 48 hours. All calls will be kept confidential.
